I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who came up with suggestions, and who gave such nice encouragement.
I checked the tension of the belt, and found it to be ever-so near perfect, so I turned to good old WD40 - it has worked a treat! I applied it about half an hour ago, and took the bike out for petrol - not a sign of that terrible squeak to be heard.
I just wish I had tried that first, now.
Well, it's a beautiful day, I have a full tank of petrol and absolutely nothing to do...
What bliss!
